The Grapes of Wrath is a classic American novel written by John Steinbeck way back in 1939. Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer prize for this work and in fact he also received the Nobel prize for Literature.

The novel is set during the Great Depression years and centers on the ‘Joads’, a poor sharecropper family who elect to move from Oklahoma to the state of California due to the ‘Dust Bowl’ drought and tough economic conditions for people working the land.

In the book the Joads, along with thousands of other families from the Oklahoma region, set out for the Central Valley area of California in search of prosperity. They seek land ownership, jobs for the family as well as wanting to find a place where their dignity is restored.

The novel’s main theme is to demonstrate, that in the situation the Joads and others are forced to endure, the best way forward is as a collective group and not as a bunch of individuals.

This classic book is read in many American High School English and college literature classes. The book was even the subject of a 1940 Hollywood movie directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda. At the time of the book’s release it was regarded as a controversial publication addressing taboo issues and it was at one time banned in some parts of the United States.
