“Follow The Rabbit-Proof Fence” was written by Doris Pilkington Garimara six years after her successful award-winning novel “Caprice - A Stockman’s Daughter“. The story is set in 1931 and is based on the author’s mother and two other young aboriginal girls who were forcibly removed from their families and taken to the Moore River Native Settlement. The story follows the girls as they use the 1500 mile rabbit-proof fence to guide them home to their family.
If you are interested in outback life in Australia then the Rabbit Proof Fence audio book is certainly a good place to start learning. The Rabbit Proof Fence audio book is a fascinating story and you will find yourself totally engrossed from start to finish. This audio book is well worth the time and effort it will take to complete the whole novel, however, you should not try and race through it as that would be an insult to the author. The story is an engrossing tale of three teenage girls who fight for their rights - they refuse to be taken from their family and community despite great forces that are deployed to counter their efforts.
You can’t help but feel compassion for these young girls as they encounter many trials and tribulations, including being able to evade pursuers that are guided by an expert Aboriginal tracker. The girl’s determination and instincts enables them to successfully cross half of a continent in order to be reunited with their families. This is a truly inspiring story and one worth taking the time to listen to. This Rabbit Proof Fence audio book is a great testimony to how one of the longest walks in the history of Australia took place and how those early European settlers worked against indigenous people of Australia.
The Rabbit Proof Fence audio book delves into the atrocities that the Aboriginal people were subjected to at this time in history including rape, murder, imprisonment and enslavement. The ‘reader’ gets a true sense of the superiority of the invaders, and is able to empathize with the helplessness and failure of the Aboriginal spears when confronted by the power of gunpowder.
This is an inspiring adventurous story with a few ironic twists and at times helpful joint ventures with the white settlers and the aboriginal girls. The Rabbit Proof Fence audio book is a compelling story that will take you through a number of different emotions as you travel the long road home with the girls.
